2016 was the Amalfi coast. Maiori seen from the road above it, which is how you see every town on that coast — stacked up a hillside with the water underneath. Then a boat, and a grotto, and four of us sitting in it in the middle of the afternoon. Venice at the end of that trip, where the Grand Canal is a road and the boats have the right of way.

2023 was two halves. First an agriturismo outside San Giovanni Valdarno in Tuscany — a working farm that rents you a room, where dinner is a grill in the garden and it takes the whole evening. Then Sicily, and Taormina, which sits on a shelf of rock above the sea with a Greek theater at the top of the town that still has the best view in it.

2024 was Puglia: flatter, quieter and cheaper than the north. Lecce, where the good part is the doors. Alberobello and its cone-roofed trulli. And a plate of pasta with mussels and clams in a town neither of us had heard of before we booked it.
