Denmark in ten photographs

Denmark is two trips: a short one in September 2017, and a proper week in Copenhagen the following June — well, five years later, in June 2022.

2017 was Hillerød and Billund. Frederiksborg Castle has a chapel that stops you in the doorway; the ceiling is doing about four things at once and all of them are gold. Billund is Legoland, and the reason Legoland is in Billund is that Billund is where Lego is from. Outside the entrance there are bricks the size of armchairs, and you are supposed to sit on them.

2022 was Copenhagen at midsummer, when the light holds until eleven at night and everybody stays out in it. Nyhavn with the colored fronts and the boats. Thorvaldsens Museum, a long room of white statues on a checkerboard floor with almost nobody else in it. The city from above, all copper spires. A windmill on the ramparts. A fountain with oxen coming out of it at speed.

Then out of the city on the last day: Frederiksborg again from across its lake, the fields above Hornbæk on the north coast, and Louisiana at Humlebæk, which is a modern art museum with a lawn that runs down to the sea and a Calder standing on it.
